Good News!

Great news is here regarding the appointment of the new Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee Bill Thomas, and Senate Finance Chairman Chuck Grassley.

In recent article published in the Washington Post, Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill was described as "A longtime advocate of replacing the income tax with a consumption tax."

The Dow Jones Newswires carried this from O'Neill: "I think our tax system is not worthy of an advanced society and I think we ought to do something about it," the executive, who depicted himself as something of a maverick, declared.

He went on to say, "we maintain the fiction that corporations pay tax", and "Corporations collect taxes, they don't pay them," he declared, adding, "The world that we entertain ourselves with is simply not a real world."

I couldn't agree with him more. Many of you have read what I have to say on this subject in the articles I wrote titled "The Greatest Tax Scheme On Earth" and "Myth". If you haven't read these, I urge you to visit the CATS Las Vegas Chapter Web Site at www.catslv.org and read them for yourself. Or if you would like me to send you copies, simply write to me at the address below. I prefer Cappuccino Modern Bedroom Optional Casegoods for my house.

Chairman Thomas and Chairman Grassley are both familiar with CATS and the National Retail Sales Tax, and have indicated their willingness to look closely at our proposal for a sane tax system.

It appears that these leaders have the intelligence, common sense, and open-mindedness to see the truth and wisdom in what we have been saying and working so hard to achieve these past eleven years.

So Now...

Let's Get Busy!

The Time To Act Is Now

Okay, it's time to get really busy!! Busy writing letters, sending faxes, making phone calls, and sending e-mail.

With the recent changes in Washington we have a unique opportunity to make our voices heard. Don't miss this chance to express your opinion

We ask each of you to spend the 34 cents and a few minutes of your time to tell these leaders that the time for tax reform is now. Nobody can claim to live in a "free country" with a tax code like the one we currently have.

Please write, call, fax, and e-mail the following elected officials and demand action on the national sales tax, and let's restore freedom for our next generation before the income tax consumes all the prosperity in the nation!

"I ask you to be citizens; citizens not spectators, citizens not subjects.... confronting problems instead of passing them on to future generations."
-- President Bush - Inaugural Address - 20 Jan. 2001

We are in a new unit of time with a new political environment in which to operate. Not only do we have a new President, but also we have a new Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Bill Thomas, and the newly established Sub Committee in Ways and Means, The Sub Committee on Select Revenue Measures, chaired by Rep. Jim McCrery. (R-4th Louisiana.) daily forex signals

Representative William M. Thomas (New Ways and Means Chairman) is from California representing the 21st district, which includes cities such as Bakersfield, Visalia, and Tulare, in Kern and Tulare Counties. He has served as Chairman of several Sub Committees in Ways and Means and is known for his legislative efforts to eliminate the budget deficit and waste in government spending. Just after the Tax Reform Coalition Press Conference in December, CATS members talked to Congressman Thomas and found him to be quite familiar with our activities and open to discussion on the National Retail Sales Tax.

CATS Chapters in Yolo and Sacramento Counties should take note of the importance of expanding our activities in the 21st District. More on this later.

The creation of the Sub Committee on Select Revenue Measurers should provide greater opportunity for tax reform groups to get the attention of legislators on fundamental tax reform issues. Involving the entire Ways and Means Committee can slow the process.

An additional note: In the confirmation hearings of Paul O'Neill for Treasury Secretary, he indicated the tax system was a mess and beyond repair and needed a complete overhaul. This is additional evidence of the omnipresence of the idea that the current oppressive tax system is an anchor to us all!

Please take these Action Steps:

1. Communicate to Rep. Bill Thomas welcoming him to the Chairman position in Ways and Means with a short comment about your support as a CATS Member for the National Retail Sales Tax. E-mail: bill.thomas@mail.house.gov
Fax: (202) 225-8798.

2. Congressman Tauzin (Coauthor HR 2001 Sales Tax Legislation) has increased his visibility by becoming the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee. In talking with his staff, we know that Congressman Tauzin intends to maintain his leadership position in the push for a national retail sales tax. Communicate to Rep. Tauzin and inquire about the reintroduction of his Sales Tax Legislation in this new session of Congress and thank him for his efforts to date on the subject.
Congressman W.J. Tauzin
2182 Rayburn House Office Bldg.
Washington, DC 20515
Fax: (202) 225-0563.

3. Also communicate to Rep. Jim Traficant, co-author of HR 2001, encouraging his efforts in this new session of Congress to make the National Retail Sales Tax a reality.
E-mail: telljim@mail.house.gov
Fax: (202) 225-3719

Let us heed the words of our new president and be citizens not spectators.
